As part of The Spot’s mission, Youth Support Coordinator’s (YSC’s) work in schools to do “whatever it takes….” to help young people stay engaged at school.

WHY?

Sometimes life can have tough challenges – family issues, homelessness, income/Centrelink issues, drug & alcohol issues, self esteem, assault; and school difficulties like bullying, or not coping with school work.

HOW?

YSC’s assist students to find the help they need to stay in education and/or training.  They also:

  1. give information, advice or refer to other organizations or centres

  2. support students to be able to access services or entitlements

  3. counsel students to make the best choices and plans

  4. run individual or group activities which promote education about current issues; self esteem building; community awareness; goal setting and other personal development topics

  5. link up with other services in the area to help students with resources and assistance

  6. make other members of the school and wider community aware of issues which may cause young people to leave school early

WHO?

YSC’s are another part of the school community support staff.  They work with school nurses; chaplains; guidance officers; administration and teachers to plan the best possible path for each person they see.

Theo Bellas – Deputy Principal and Head of Student Services

Browns Plains State High School

“YSC’s play a vital role in the smooth functioning of the school.  They provide a strong avenue of support for students.  They are often able to engineer successful outcomes for students at-risk.  Not only are they educators and counsellors, but they are crucial members of the Student Support Services team.”
