What is the aim of the programme?
Transitions prepares young people to transition back to mainstream schooling, further training, or employment.
What does the programme consist of?
The core modules are: Year 10 Numeracy, year 10 Literacy, Certificate 1 in Information Technology and a Certificate 1 in Work education. Elective modules include: graphic design, photography, music production and rock wall climbing. Other electives are also offered periodically.
What is the class size?
Class size is limited to eight young people. This enables the cultivation of a relaxed learning environment where young people receive individual assistance, and plenty of guidance and affirmation.
What are the hours?
Young people attend classes for four hours per day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Electives are in addition to this. Wednesday is kept free of classes so young people can devote a full day to employment or work experience.
How long does the programme take?
Young people are given six months to complete the programme. With consistent attendance and effort, this is a realistic length of time for most young people.
How flexible is the programme?
A young person’s individual circumstances are always taken into account when planning a programme with them. Our goal is to support young people in achieving their dreams. For some, this means focusing only on the core modules so that they can complete the programme as quickly as possible. For others, this means adding other activities such as electives, work experience, or employment. In circumstances where young people have chosen to actively engage in a number of things, we will provide support to them for longer than the typical six month period if that is what they need.
Is the programme accredited?
Transitions is managed by Education Queensland through Browns Plains State High School in partnership with other local high schools. The programme is recognized as an alternate way of achieving a Year 10 qualification. On completion of the course a comprehensive Statement of Achievement is issued by the school. However, the programme is run on site at The Spot.
Where is the programme based?
Transitions is based at The Spot Community Services in Browns Plains.
How do I enroll?
Most young people are referred to the programme by their school. In situations where the young person is not currently enrolled in a school, but is under the care of a community organization or service, that organization or service may make the referral. In other situations, parents or guardians can enquire directly to the programme coordinator about the enrolment process.
Is there an enrolment cost?
Transitions is fully funded by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts under the Access to Pathways grants programme. Young people enroll in the programme at no personal cost to them.
What happens when I complete the course?
When a young person is nearing programme completion, they are assisted in exploring further education and / or employment options. The referring school or community organization is included in this process.
